Abstract

Tooth Autotransplantation in Interdisciplinary Treatment

Tooth autotransplantation is increasingly supported by clinical evidence as a predictable biologic treatment modality in interdisciplinary dentistry and orthodontics. In this lecture, Dr. Dick Barendregt will present contemporary evidence behind autotransplantation, focusing on the regenerative role of the periodontal ligament (PDL) in maintaining bone, soft tissue architecture, proprioception, and long-term functional integration. The presentation will highlight clinical outcome data from one of the world’s largest autotransplantation cohorts, including long-term follow-up studies on premolar transplantation in anterior and posterior regions. Evidence regarding survival, success, periodontal healing, root development, and tissue adaptation will be discussed in relation to treatment planning, timing, donor root development, and orthodontic integration. Using clinical cases and modern digital workflows, participants will gain practical insight into biologically based treatment concepts, minimally traumatic surgical protocols, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the expanding clinical applications of autotransplantation as an alternative to implants in both growing and adult patients.
